Fierce Kingdom by Gin Phillips 3/5
This novel is about a mother and her young son being stuck in a zoo while there is an active shooter present.
This was one of my BOTM selections, and there was a lot of hype around this novel. It does hit close to many tragic events that are happening around the country as active shootings do happen, and many people have been injured and killed by them. As I am writing this, the tragedy in Las Vegas has just unfolded.
I am going to keep this review short. The novel was intriguing in the beginning. I felt the fear and anticipation of what was going to happen next. Around the middle of the novel, I felt like it was losing steam. The plot is told in time increments, and I feel that it was drawn out too long. I also would’ve liked for the ending to have more closure.
This book does a good job of showing how fierce a mother’s love is for her child, and, when faced with unthinkable danger, what she will do to keep her son safe. Phillips does not shy away from writing about such a tough topic that is plaguing in today’s society. It’s a tough subject.
Overall, I hear this hits mothers a little harder than other readers. It may be worth checking out, but it doesn’t shy away from a topic that is prevalent. It can hit really close to home.
